I have to agree with one of the other earlier reviewers that I read before I purchased the book. He has it broken up into two parts, on the left page the "historical" writing and on the opposite page his commentaries. Although the format could be interesting, I just found his commentaries a little too off the cuff and shallow. I don't mean to be a judge since some people may like this...it just didn't work for me.
I found "The Lunar Tao" to be much more informative in a daily reflective kind of manner along with some needed and not so needed history of China, Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism.

The Second Book of the Tao Stephen Mitchell 9781616802998 Books Reviews

I bought this book a few years ago right after hearing an interview with Stephen Mitchell. I keep it on my bedstand. It is my constant inspiration. I like to open it at random and always find the message that speaks to me and enlightens my life at that moment. I never tire of it.
Enjoyed reading the book. I bought the audible version as well. Stephen Mitchell did a great job compiling this book and there is a lot of wisdom with a smirk I would say (good sense of humor).
Great book. Better than the first Tao Te Ching.
I had read the Chuang-Tzu before in a different translation, and struggled through it. Unlike the Tao te Ching, the quality of thought was uneven. Some parts were great and others pedestrian. But Stephen Mitchell has selected the best parts, and added his poetic insights. This is far and away the best version I have found.
I absolutely loved this book. I was so happy that I took a chance and bought it. Stephen Mitchell's translations of these nuggets ancient Chinese wisdom are excellent as usual, but what really sets this book apart are his commentaries. On the page opposite each of the 64 poems is a prose commentary that has humor as well as insights that brilliantly illuminate the original. I know this is high praise, but I admit to liking his accessible commentaries even better than the poems he is commenting upon.

In fact, Mitchell acknowledges in the light-hearted introduction that the translations are "loose." Thus, the combination of his adventurous translations with his finely-crafted commentaries give this special volume a clarity that absolutely works. It connects spiritually with a wholeness that I don't think I've ever experienced amongst all the many Eastern wisdom volumes I have read. The fact that it is compact and concise--just 64 poems and commentaries--adds to its power (as well as its convenience.)

Yes, I am someone who already respected the work of Stephen Mitchell (including his exceptional collaboration with his wife Byron Katie, "A Thousand Names for Joy," another favorite of mine). But "The Second Book of the Tao" is, in my opinion, absolutely one of his greatest works. If you love Eastern Wisdom, don't miss this gem.
A Fabulous book. One of those that I read, re-read and as I read it the second time I folded down the corners of pages that particularly resonate with me and have re-read those many times. This is one of those books that I have given as a gift, many times, to friends of like mind. A translation of ancient Taoist texts on the left page and a modern interpretation by the author on the right. I hold this book in high esteem.
All things are connected... The Tao has awareness of nature and is nature, yet our words are not it...they are just pointers. An excerpt from page 110 What people love about life is its miraculous beauty; what they hate about death is the loss and decay around it. Yet losing is not losing, and decay turns into beauty, as beauty turns back into decay. We are breathed in, breathed out. Therefore all you need is to understand the one breath that makes up the world.

Stephen Mitchell also provides commentary for each chapter to clarify and explore the words further for the reader. Well done Stephen!
