Spin and deceit seem to be everywhere these days. Hard work gets you nowhere.
Everywhere you look, cheats and fraudsters are winning while honest grafters are passed by. Why? The answer to this puzzle of modern life was discovered by Angus Mould, a Professor at Inverconnon University during his research into Effortless Useless Work, or EUW. EUW, he found, pervades almost every field of human activity.
There is a proposal to merge Inverconnon with its neighbour Scarford. Inverconnon is a traditional university with ancient roots. Scarford is of more recent origin but with grand aspirations. The merger proposal is not welcome to the Vice Chancellor of Inverconnon, the suave Andrew Curtis, who feels it will degrade his university’s status, but he cannot be seen to oppose it for political reasons. He therefore sets out to stifle the merger by underhand means.
Party to his plan are an assortment of academics including the cross-dressing Mould and his girlfriend Daphne Entwhistle, a Senior Lecturer who seeks to combine the Arts and Technology in a variety of unlikely projects. She is currently running a public experiment to show that mice can understand English.
Meanwhile, Harry Guscott, the commercialisation head of Inverconnon, gives the kill-the-merger game away while trying to impress Maggie Turton, an attractive Scarford mathematics lecturer who has an interesting moonlighting career.
Through a series of misunderstandings, Angus finds himself the target of both a hit-man and an unscrupulous student. His eventual fate rebounds on one of his colleagues whose dubious tastes are exposed in a surprising and embarrassing way.
All of this eventually leads to the creation of the new University of Lindenvale whose future looks distinctly similar to the past.

I read this book because a friend recommended it. I laughed so much that my husband got jealous. He wanted to know “why”? What is it in this book that makes me enjoy it?It is because of:
- its voice, a wry satirico-cynical tack aimed at the university system in the UK;
- its complex, fully developed, coherent, well held together, perfectly “credible” plot;
- well built up scenes that never fail to climax and turn around in an unexpectedly funny way;
- ever-expanding surprising farcical situations;
- and of course, because of its colorful heroes: a panoply of mad academics, ambitious, yet lazy Ph.D.- chasing students, strip dancers and gangsters (of Chinese origin); a Greek with a very long name nobody can say (Nanacopopoulos, try it, it tickles the cheeks and explodes in the nose like snuff); a philosopher wearing a skirt, as per the Scottish tradition, with a Machiavellian scheming “artistic” girlfriend; a fat Polish lady called unsuitably Elly; devious lecturers, assistant professors, business mess-ups, and mice who are linguistically apt; a drug addict hit man, miscellaneous pub patrons, boyfriends and half-drunk local women chasing after them; young naked beauties crotch-seducing salivating old men; dogs peeing (somehow a few yellow drops end up as a dressing on a avocado-parmesan salad obliterating all possibilities for a romantic end to a date), pooping (the smelly result destroys a key piece of evidence) and trying to have sex (several times, the first one by mistake with the trouser leg of a fallen Ph. D. victim). I’m sure that is not all.
And, yes of course ... a Bridge over a river called Linden, which of course in the end falls down. Read the book to find out why...
….and to have a good time that might make your spouse jealous, like Johnny my husband. But then, one could always share the joy of reading it together, which might entail some unexpected results. Thanks to Shon Dunbar! Well, that is a dumb author’s name, but a brilliant book.
